The Metropolitan City of Bologna, within the framework of the European project AMIGOS (Active Mobility Innovations for Green and safe city sOlutionS), part of the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme, is working on the enhancement of the Piccola Cassia.

The Piccola Cassia is a route whose initial frequentation dates back to the Roman era and extends along the itinerary from Modena to Bologna, reaching as far as Pistoia. This route is notable for its historical, scenic, and enogastronomic significance. The Piccola Cassia constitutes a strategic asset in order to distribute tourist flows in rural areas and to foster their development through socially and environmentally sustainable tourism experiences.

The AMIGOS project, by virtue of its experimental nature, provides an opportunity for the co-design and development of innovative solutions that will expand the Piccola Cassia's user base pertaining the portion in the Metropolitan area of Bologna. Currently, thanks to the collaboration with the Fondazione per lo Sport Silvia Parente, dedicated to the design of inclusive outdoor itineraries for vulnerable users, the development of new routes is underway. These will be managed through the implementation of the Outdoor365 web portal, which will comply with the digital accessibility standards established by the European Union.

Through multi-level coordination, the rich heritage of the Piccola Cassia will be accessible to a wider range of tourists and, above all, will contribute to improving the quality of life for the inhabitants of the Bolognese Apennines.
