The Emilia-Romagna region is leading the way in the transition to a more sustainable and decentralized energy system through the development of Energy Communities.

These initiatives bring together citizens, businesses, and institutions to collectively produce, manage, and consume renewable energy.

A recent study within the JETforCE project highlights the key role of Energy Communities in achieving energy independence, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering economic and social development. The report explores their legal framework, socio-economic impact, technological requirements, and policy recommendations to enhance their implementation.

Successful case studies, such as Enel X and Ferrari’s Renewable Energy Community in Fiorano and Maranello, demonstrate the potential of these projects. Similarly, initiatives like “Top Condomini” focus on residential energy efficiency, proving that community-driven solutions are essential for an inclusive energy transition.

Emilia-Romagna has the opportunity to become a national model for energy sustainability, but challenges such as regulatory complexity and financial accessibility must be addressed. With strong policies, stakeholder collaboration, and community engagement, Energy Communities can pave the way for a resilient and green energy future.
