"Waste reduction series I: plastics

Interreg Europe is hosting the webinar “Waste reduction series I: plastics” on 16 October 2025, from 10:00 to 11:30. The event will focus on reducing plastic waste. According to the European Commission, up to 500,000 tonnes of plastic end up in the sea every year, and global plastic production is expected to double by 2040. Each European citizen produces around half a tonne of municipal waste annually. Despite the EU’s targets to significantly reduce waste by 2030, production has not decreased in the past decade.

To reverse this trend, the EU promotes a waste hierarchy with prevention as the top priority. In this context, the webinar “Waste reduction series I: plastics” will address single-use plastics, which are among the most problematic due to their widespread use, low recyclability, and environmental impact. The webinar will feature a keynote by Emmanuelle Maire (European Commission, DG Environment), followed by good practice presentations from Interreg Europe projects, including #moNOuse EVENTS—an initiative by the Metropolitan City of Bologna presented by Paolo Azzurro, who has long worked with the authority to promote zero-waste events and will share a Good Practice from the MINEV project.

The session will conclude with a roundtable discussion, offering concrete ideas for more sustainable local policies. Don’t miss the chance to discover real solutions for a more sustainable future—register and join the webinar!
