COOL NOONS: new trees, fountains and benches to make Imola cooler, more inclusive and resilient

Within the framework of the European project COOL NOONS, the Metropolitan City of Bologna, together with the Municipality of Imola, has implemented and tested a set of integrated solutions aimed at improving the livability of public spaces during the hottest hours of the day, addressing the impacts of heatwaves and making urban routes safer, more accessible and welcoming.

The interventions focused on key urban corridors connecting the train station, the historic center and the Autodromo, areas highly frequented by residents, students and tourists. The solutions were identified through a co-design process involving citizens and local stakeholders, and respond to concrete needs emerging from the territory: shaded areas, access to water and opportunities for rest.

The implemented solutions include the installation of trees, drinking water fountains and benches. Tree planting in Piazzale Michelangelo and Piazza Gramsci has increased shaded areas, contributing to the mitigation of the urban heat island effect. At the same time, the installation of drinking fountains in high-traffic locations—such as Piazza Medaglie d’Oro, Piazza Saffi, the Rocca Sforzesca area and Viale Dante—ensures free access to water, reducing heat-related risks and supporting active mobility. In addition, in Giardino Bernabè, benches and tables create micro-resting areas integrated with existing greenery, fostering social interaction, inclusion and a more extensive use of public spaces by the whole community, including vulnerable groups.

Overall, these solutions contribute to making Imola a more climate-resilient city, enhancing the quality and usability of everyday public spaces without creating tourism-exclusive infrastructure. This approach strengthens the link between urban policies and tourism attractiveness, in line with European objectives for sustainability, inclusion and climate adaptation.
